Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast: Spice, Sail and Stone Town
Carved doors, dhow sunsets, and white-sand beaches: how to experience Zanzibar and the Swahili Coast as the perfect barefoot finish to a safari.

For centuries, dhows carried spices, ivory, and ideas across the Indian Ocean to the Swahili Coast. Today Zanzibar and its neighbors blend African, Arab, Indian and European influences into something unlike anywhere else on the continent, making them a natural, romantic finish after the Serengeti or the Maasai Mara.
Stone Town
Zanzibar’s historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a labyrinth of narrow lanes, carved wooden doors, bazaars and rooftop restaurants. Walk with a local guide through the markets, the House of Wonders, and the waterfront, and finish with sunset drinks above the harbor as dhows glide past.
Spice farms and Swahili cooking
A visit to a spice farm lets you smell, touch and taste cloves, cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg growing wild. Many guests follow it with a private cooking lesson that introduces coconut-rich Swahili cuisine, fresh seafood, and the island’s street food.
Beaches and the sea
The north coast, around Nungwi and Kendwa, has calm, swimmable water at all tides. The southeast, near Paje and Jambiani, is famous for kitesurfing and for dramatic tides that reveal sandbars and rock pools. Choose by mood: social and lively in the north, quiet and wild in the south.
Wildlife and reefs
Snorkeling and diving on the coral reefs around Mnemba Atoll.
Red colobus monkeys in Jozani Forest, found nowhere else in the world.
Giant tortoises on Prison Island.
Whale shark encounters off Mafia Island, seasonal from around October to March.
Beyond Zanzibar
The Swahili Coast also includes Lamu in Kenya, a car-free island town of coral stone houses, and the quiet beaches of Mozambique’s northern islands. Each offers slow days, dhow sailing, and warm hospitality.
When to go
The drier, sunnier months run from roughly June to October and again from December to February. Rain peaks from March to May. A week after safari, split between Stone Town and one beach, is a classic pairing.
