THE JOURNEY

Atlas peaks to Sahara dunes

Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia

Imperial cities, riads, souks and a camel ride into the Sahara.

Rose-coloured walls, rooftop terraces and a square that comes alive at dusk. Marrakech is spice, silk and soul.
Snow-capped peaks rise above Berber villages and terraced valleys. A day in the High Atlas feels a world away from the city.
Golden Saharan dunes tower over the horizon. Ride camels to a desert camp and sleep beneath a blanket of stars.
A Roman city rising from the Algerian plateau, with a triumphal arch and streets still lined with columns. Often called the Pompeii of Africa.
A plateau of sandstone forests with thousands of ancient rock paintings. Walk through one of the largest open-air galleries on earth.
Ruins above the sea, once the heart of a Mediterranean empire. Carthage and the Bardo museum tell of Phoenician, Roman and Islamic eras.
A hilltop Roman city with a theatre, temples and a capitol. Dougga is one of the best preserved Roman sites in North Africa.
The gateway to the Sahara, where camel trains set off across the dunes. Palm groves, markets and the edge of the desert.
