What to Pack for a Luxury Safari (and What to Leave at Home)
Layers, light luggage and the few items worth bringing. A practical guide from specialists who watch guests arrive every week.

The secret to packing for a luxury safari is simple: bring less than you think. Most camps offer same-day laundry, light aircraft limit your baggage, and the bush is no place for a heavy suitcase.
Clothing: layers in quiet colors
Neutral shades such as khaki, olive and tan. Avoid bright white, which shows dust, and dark blue or black in regions with tsetse flies, which are drawn to those colors.
Layers for dawn and dusk. Early morning drives can feel close to freezing in winter, while afternoons turn warm.
Long sleeves and trousers for sun and insect protection.
A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a warm fleece or light jacket.
Comfortable closed shoes for walking and a pair of sandals for camp.
Luggage: soft and light
Bush flights usually require soft-sided duffel bags with a weight limit, often around 44 pounds (20 kilograms). We confirm the exact allowance for every flight on your itinerary, and we can arrange storage for extra luggage in Johannesburg or Cape Town.
Gear worth bringing
Binoculars. An 8x42 pair is a reliable all-round choice.
A camera with a lens in the 100 to 400 millimeter range, plus spare batteries and memory cards.
A universal power adapter and a small power bank.
Sunscreen, lip balm and insect repellent.
Any prescription medication in its original packaging, plus a small first-aid kit.
Leave at home
Camouflage clothing, which is illegal for civilians in several African countries.
Hard-shell suitcases that will not fit in a small aircraft.
Drones, which are restricted or banned in most parks and reserves.
Plastic bags, which are banned in a number of countries.
Flashy jewelry and anything you would hate to lose.
Health and paperwork
Speak to a travel-medicine doctor well before departure about malaria prevention and routine vaccines. Check your passport validity and carry digital and paper copies of your documents. We send every guest a full checklist before they travel.
