Planning Africa from the U.S.: Flights, Health, Visas and the Questions We Hear First
From nonstop flights to malaria advice and visas, the practical answers American travelers ask before they book an African safari.

Africa feels far away until you look at the details. With the right planning, the trip is easier than most people expect. Here are the questions we hear most from American travelers.
How long is the flight?
Most travelers fly overnight from the East Coast through Johannesburg or Cape Town, either nonstop or with one connection. The longest legs run roughly 15 to 17 hours. South Africa is six to seven hours ahead of New York, depending on daylight saving time, so we build in a gentle first day to recover.
What about visas and passports?
Your passport should be valid well beyond your return date and have several blank pages. U.S. citizens can currently visit South Africa and Botswana for tourism without a visa for a limited stay, but rules change and differ by country. We check the requirements for every country on your route before you travel and send you a clear document list.
What health precautions do I need?
Speak with a travel-medicine doctor a few weeks before departure. Malaria risk varies by region and season. Cape Town and the Winelands are malaria-free, while parts of northern Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Kruger region carry risk. Keep routine vaccines up to date, and ask about any others your doctor recommends.
Which insurance should I carry?
Choose a travel policy that includes emergency medical evacuation. Remote camps rely on air evacuation, and that coverage matters more than almost anything else on your list.
Do I need local currency?
Most luxury camps are all-inclusive, so day-to-day spending is minimal. Bring small U.S. dollar bills for tips, plus a small amount of local currency for the occasional purchase in town.
When should I go?
Botswana and Namibia are at their best from May to October. South Africa works year-round, with Cape Town at its warmest from November to March. East Africa’s migration has its own calendar, which we are happy to map to your dates.
Why use a specialist?
Because the best camps and guides book far in advance, and every connection matters. We handle the flights, transfers, permits and details, and we are on call if anything changes while you travel.
